Opera Mini 6 fullscreen on Samsung Jet S8000

March 23, 2011

Summary: To get Opera Mini 6.1, fullscreen, on your Samsung S8000 Jet, point your phone to this web address: http://bit.ly/pE1GkS. Enjoy!

Update 2011-07-07: Now with Opera Mini 6.1. The link above now points to the JAR file itself, not the JAD file as before. I had some problems with getting the modified JAD to work. The linked JAR is the "English (International)" version, according to Opera's pages. The installation (when you start Opera Mini for the first time) took a few minutes on my phone, so please be patient.

When you go to the download page for Opera Mini/Mobile for the S8000 you get:

"Based on testing performed by Opera Software, this device supports Opera Mini 4.3."

Well, I am sure it does! But so did Opera Mini 5, and I am quite sure Opera Mini 6 will work nicely as well, except for one thing: Opera Mini does not tell S8000 that it supports touch, so the phone puts an extra set of keys in the lower area of the screen when the application is running, taking up valuable screen real estate.

Luckily, the solution is quite simple: Add the following setting to the JAD file that describes the application (the file you get when you choose to download Opera Mini 6 anyway, but to a regular computer):

MIDlet-Touch-Support: true

And then use that JAD file instead to install Opera Mini 6. The one I fixed is provided above, so go ahead and download it to your phone right away!

I am not sure if Opera ever sorted out their JAD file for Opera Mini 5, but until it is fixed for Opera Mini 6, it is available here, at least.

Note: This fix might work/be needed on some other Samsung phones as well, but I only have the S8000 myself.

The latest official version (6.5) seems to be working nicely for me, without any additional tweaks. Just go to http://m.opera.com/, choose "Other download options", then "Opera Mini 6.5", and finally "Download Opera Mini 6.5".

On a related note I have a samsung jet and use opera mini 6.5 - downloaded it from opera mini download page chose other download options clicked on opera 6.5 ignoring the 'only opera mini 4 works with samsung s8000' bit. How come it crashes every few weeks and I have to redownload it? It starts up the opera mini initial page with the red bar that goes across the screen but it stops so far and then seems to crash or stop and not move. Then I have to delete and reinstall. Does anyone else get this and why?

I have encountered start-up freezes/crashes as well with older versions, but so far not with 6.5. And I have then only had to force quit it and start it again...
